Leave of Absence, Extension of Study Period and Exemptions

  • Please take note: The application for leave of absence, extension of study period and exemptions (individual part time) must be submitted in writing with the signature of the mentor! You can find the application form on the Info Center website in the Downloads area.
  • Please enclose a list of the planned course of study with the application.
  • Please take advantage of the Study Administration's advisory services early on.

Please note:

According to Section 32 Paragraph 1 of the State Higher Education Act, coursework and examinations are linked to enrollment (re-registration) in the respective degree program with a corresponding artistic focus. A re-registration is a basic requirement for all coursework and examinations. This also applies if coursework and examinations have to be completed beyond the standard period of study or after the final examination has been taken. Starting from Summer Semester 2023, a re-registration is also required in this case. Entitlement to lessons is unaffected (an additional re-registration does not mean an additional entitlement to individual lessons). During a leave of absence, coursework and examinations are generally not possible.

Exemption (Individual Part-Time)

According to § 30 (3) LHG, Universities should organize their programs so that they can be studied part-time (individual part-time). This means that students can be "exempted" from academic requirements for the given semester upon a well-founded application and these academic requirements (and associated lessons/courses) can be made up in a later semester. With this procedure, the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen enables the course of study to be adapted according to the individual needs of the students and according to the requirements within a study program.\. Approved exemptions from course work can generally be made up for in the following semesters or, if this is not possible, applied for in an extension semester.

Examples:

  • Exemption from major instrument lessons or required secondary instrument lessons because of a physical impairment, but the student still participates in all other courses
  • Exemption from individual compulsory courses for important reasons, but participation in the main subject and other courses
  • Exemption from parts of the main subject due to travel restrictions (e.g. corona crisis) and postponement of parts of the main subject to a later semester
  • Exemption from certain lessons due to an internship in an orchestra or other professional activities for a whole semester (with individual lessons and with the opportunity to practice at the university)

Consequences of Exemptions (individual part-time):

You can participate in and use all courses and lessons as well as facilities of the university, with the exception of the courses for which you were exempted. Exempted lessons and courses can be taken in a later semester. If this extends your study time, you can apply for this together with the exemption or at a later point in time.

Leave of Absence

According to § 61 LHG, students can apply for a leave of absence for up to two semesters for an important reason. The leave of absence is generally valid for the whole semester. A semester on leave is not counted towards the study period. If you have any questions, please contact the Prorector for Studies, Education, and Research or  the Study Administration in Office 244.

Examples:

  • Leave of absence because of an internship in an orchestra for an entire semester wegen eines Praktikums in einem Orchester für ein ganzes Semester (without accompaniment by the University and without the opportunity to practice at the University)
  • Leave of absence for valid private reasons (bereavement, illness, etc.)
  • Leave of absence for stays abroad for studies or internships

Consequences of taking leave:

Students on leave are not entitled to participate in courses (lessons) or use the Univeristy facilities (practice rooms, recording studio, etc.). The University is an exception (§ 28 LHG) and can be used during a leave of absence. This means that students on leave of absence do not have any classes during the semester and are not allowed to practice at the university.

An application is always required for exemptions and leave of absence. Please use the appropriate template in the forms area.
