Study Konzertexamen in Trossingen

This program is reserved for especially talented students. The main focus is on repertoire study as a basic requirement for entrance to concert life or participation in competitions. Along with concentrating on the chosen major, the students are required to have a heightened ability for independent work.

(NB for international students: the Konzertexamen is similar to programs offered by institutions in other countries, such as an "Artist Diploma.")

Prerequisite for admittance to the Konzertexamen program is proof of completed musical study on the same major instrument in an artistic course or a master or equivalent degree in a domestic or foreign institution and a passed entrance audition.

Information about the Application

The following documents must be submitted with the filled-out application form:

  • 2 passport photos
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with essential information about previous education and, if applicable, employment
  • Proof of qualification for university entrance in the form of a certified transcript or copy
  • Declaration as to whether and when the applicant has already participated in an admissions process at the Trossingen University of Music.
  • From applicants who have previously studied at other Universities: proof of periods of study, examinations, and acquired ECTS points.
  • From international students (except those already studying in Germany): proof of sufficient knowledge of German (at least a B1 level) as well as a declaration of financial security for studying.

Please pay the fee by the above-mentioned deadline to this account, stating intended purpose on the memo line (IMPORTANT) and enclose the deposit slip with your application.

(if you cannot type umlauts, you may write "Anmeldegebühr" as "Anmeldegebuehr.")

  • For applicants to the Music and Movement (rhythmics/EMP) with artistic focus (major), a medical certificate stating that there are no medical objections to this choice of subject.
  • Link to an uncut video file presenting the applicant playing (about 15 minutes) as well as a list of at least four complete works that have been prepared, the level of which corresponds to repertoire requirements for international competitions (90 minutes of music total).
  • For international students: required certificates, degrees, etc. in certified translation (in German or English).

  • (1) Applicants who are not from German-speaking countries must prove that they have sufficient knowledge of the German language in accordance with Article 60, Paragraph 3, Item 1 of the LHG. Unless otherwise required in the annex to these articles of association, proof must be provided by a certificate corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • (2) Proof of a certified language school or institution must be attached to the application.
  • (3) In exceptional cases, a conditional admission can be granted without proof of sufficient German language skills, as long as the student has acquired the necessary B2 level by the end of the second semester and proves it through an examination at an independent institution such as a certified ZD language school, Goethe Institute, etc. The examination board decides on these cases. If the student is unable to prove a B2 level by the end of the second semester, the conditional admission expires.

Prescreening: the applicant submits a link to a video (see registration form), which presents them performing (15 minutes in length) and a list of at least four complete prepared works, whose level of difficulty corresponds to the repertoire requirements of international competitions (90 minutes of music altogether). A committee (of at least three members of the corresponding subject area) decides in a preselection, which applicants to invite to the final audition.

Artistic Presentation: the examination committee chooses works from the repertoire list, parts of works, or parts of movements for the applicant to perform. The audition lasts 20-30 minutes.

Entrance audition for voice and the following instruments:  Piano, organ, accordion, guitar, violin, viola, violoncello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, tuba, percussion.

Entrance audition with focus on early music for voice and the following instruments: baroque violin, baroque viola, baroque cello, viola da gamba, recorder, cornett, tranverse flute, historical oboe, historic clarinet and chalumeau, historical bassoon, historical trumpet, historic trombone, historical horn, instruments of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Historical Keyboard Instruments, with focus on harpsichord, clavichord, and organ: A larger work or a demanding group of works from four different styles/epochs, including one by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Fortepiano focus: three works from the Classical period to the Early Romantic, if possible on two available fortepianos.

Historical Keyboard Instruments Basso Continuo: an ambitious program on two different keyboard instruments, if possible. The applicant will bring their own chamber music partners to the entrance audition.

Historical lute and guitar instruments: four large works or demanding groups of works from the Renaissance and/or the Baroque periods on at least two of the following instruments: Baroque lute, Baroque guitar, theorbo, archiluto, Renaissance lute or vihuela.

For the early music area, a consultation is held after the entrance audition.

Applicants will bring their own chamber music partners with them to the entrance audition, if necessary.
